Fun fact: the song they’re singing is the Rime of the Ancient Mariner. It does not appear in the actual text of the novel, and wasn’t originally even a song at all, but it is a pretty well-known sailors’ epic poem about the widespread legend/superstition of albatross birds. Albatrosses are supposed to be lucky birds, but killing them would bring misfortune and disaster to sailors. The Rime of the Ancient Mariner is the story of one such disaster, and it’s relevant because Reasons. (and then iron maiden, of all groups, made a song version of it, which is just such a vibe. thank u ms kim for showing us that in jr year english)

ALSO!!! some of you may recall on the first page the pequod appeared, but I mentioned that some years ago (ha) I visited the Charles W. Morgan in Mystic Seaport, CT — the last surviving wooden whaleship — for the fun nautical nonsense and also reference pics! well, this weekend I’m going again! i’ve been meaning to return for ages, again both for the vibes and also for more reference pics (especially since the last time i went, while i did get many pictures, i didn’t reaaally know what i was doing and so didn’t know all the kinds of refs i needed), and finally planned a little trip with some friends before i Yeet myself across the country, and this time I’m going to have the excellent privilege of speaking with a Melville scholar there about the ship and Moby Dick!!! i am extremely fucking pumped yall. anyway you should definitely go visit the museum if you’re ever in the area; the ships are all gorgeous and the morgan herself is soooooo. so. /positive

Patrons read three weeks ahead! been a little behind on putting up extra art and stuff recently, though i have stuff to share, since i’m about to move across the country and am busy with all that, but there’s still older goodies of extra art + walkthroughs of my painting process + page wips + etc

ok I'm back with an actual comment:

The Rime of the Ancient Mariner is great and I'm particularly delighted that it's featured on the same page as Bulkington — I'm a His Dark Materials fan and love coming up with dæmon headcanons for fictional characters, and I chose a wandering albatross for Bulkington! <3

Also, I hope you have a great trip this weekend, that sounds like so much fun!

oh hell yeah!! i love that as a daemon for him. it’s been ages since i read HDM but i think an albatross or some kind of seabird would make a great daemon for ish too :)

and thank you!! i’m so excited

Ahh I'm glad you agree! For Ishmael I decided on a sooty albatross — one of the smaller species. I'm also pleased with my choice of a Steller's sea eagle for Ahab! I might do a little writeup once I have all the main characters figured out :)

i believe bulkington is a southerner tho i don’t think it mentions specifically in the book iirc? ishmael calls him a southerner tho!
and tbf these dialogue lines are not technically bulkington’s in the book; they’re some random sailor’s during the focsl scene, i just assigned diff folks from the focsl scene to the cast i had already made !

I love all the crowd scenes and the way the different panels and images weave together with the narrative.
