The interesting implication here (that Melville of course doesn’t ever really do anything with) is that all three of the harpooners have themselves encountered the White Whale and survived relatively unscathed.

fascinated by the choice to frame the harpooners as distinctly apart from the rest of the crew, both physically in the frame, and their attitudes about the upcoming hunt for moby dick (and also the 'live starbuck reaction' panel). now that i'm thinking about it, i would have liked to have the harpooners comment more on seeing moby dick in action - it would further re-enforce the idea that the whale is whale and something is up with ahab . . . god the moby dick brain worms don't stop

it was definitely a conscious choice! and yeah, the harpooners dont get to comment much more on their encounters with MD in the book, which is also something i really wanted/felt was missing… so rest assured we’ll be getting some of that later :p
but god yah the brainworms real. brainwhales
also LIVE STARBUCK REACTION I LOVE THAT

been hemming and hawing about writing a comment here to point it out but a really specific detail that stands out to me in this page is the translucent speech bubbles for the other members of the crew in the first panel. it adds life to the rest of the crew. they'd naturally have their own thoughts on the matter and would be whispering among themselves about it. putting them in the same panel as the harpooners asking their questions adds to that whole sense of urgency. and since it's translucent it also stands out well as background chatter in contrast to the main! esp since we don't see it in a lot of pages. sorry i've never grown out of my overanalyzing habits JILSDGKLD point is i love it

also yeah! i've always thought about the harpooners' comments about moby dick, the thought of them having their own experiences with it. has ishmael ever asked queequeg about it? like, "hey queequeg you've seen that whale before right? how was it? what are we up against?". do the harpooners trade stories about it? idk. lots of Thoughts.

alsoalso omg i saw that it's the anniversary of the dbwgm experience 😭 gosh that story is still so iconic omg 😂 happy 3 years it's been as long as a whaling voyage (i hadn't even finished reading md yet at the time!) miss y'all from the dickscord always i think of y'all all the time 🥺 is the server still up/active? i hope y'all are doing well, your little server sibling is still alive and getting by somehow ^-^ whale weekly may be coming up soon and more fans may come in but they'll never understand the wild ride that was md:amr era and they'll never be as cool as the community of that server <33 happy anniv HAHA and loving the quarterdeck pages so far

i’m really glad you enjoyed that! i fussed for a while over how to include those speech bubbles, because i wanted them there to show how everyone’s reacting to this news, but i didn’t want to detract from the harpooner squad’s input. eventually decided on this! but yes please never hesitate to leave a comment friend, i love getting them in general and especially love hearing from you! pls do not apologize for the analyzing it makes my detail obsessed brain very happy
but yeah! melville doesn’t rly give the harpooners further chance to speak on their experiences, but this was something i also really felt was missing so i’ve added that later on. we Will be hearing more from them about what they think about the white whale.
AND YEAH IT WAS THE ANNIVERSARY DJFHSHKFSFH the server is still up! it’s quieter than it used to be but we still all chat now and then! i am glad to hear youre doing well :) may we all carry the dbwgm in our memory…..
