Fun fact: in the book, this Bulkington dude is this really hot sailor guy who Ishmael spends literally an entire paragraph describing the hotness off: “he stood full six feet in height, with noble shoulders, a chest like a coffer-dam. I have seldom seen such brawn in a man...” Oh, sweetheart.
Anyway, there’s some theory that Bulkington was going to be the original Queequeg of the story (playing the role of Ishmael’s companion) — he’s the only other person that Ishmael ever refers to as his “comrade” and, like, *gestures vaguely at this whole paragraph*. Based on the language used to introduce them both, it’s not difficult to believe that Bulkington was the original Queequeg (esp. bc Queequeg probably came later, since he was based off a real person). Bulkington himself all but disappears from the rest of the novel; he's only mentioned one other time. I dunno, I think it’s cool.

Ishmael in that last panel is just lovely.

When I first looked at this page, I imagined Ishmael was comparing himself to Bulkington somehow, and coming up short. Probably because of how he droops his head in that second reaction shot.
