I really relate to Ishmael as somebody who's had a lot of experience with hypomania/depression, like obviously a semi-suicidal whaling trip isn't the wisest idea but I get it, you know?

Something I noticed when I was reading the book is that a concerning amount of people on the pequod are just ready to
straight up die. The danger is part of the appeal to them. And the same is for Ishmael since we know how he feels in the beginning of the book (but then he lives lol)
Anyways the background is really baller in this page I am enjoying it

Oh absolutely!! ishmael even directly comments on it a few times, how everyone who goes to sea is a broken and broken hearted person. starbuck and the "wide watery loneliness of his life" and ishmael writing his will and telling us how this is commonplace among sailors and the blacksmith full of grief and misfortune coming to sea instead and "Come hither, broken-hearted; here is another life without the guilt of intermediate death"
(also ishmael going to sea on the pequod passively choosing death bc he has nothing to live for vs ishmael in ahab's boat on the very last day of the chase maybe actively choosing death, but still being the one to survive anyways? ouch)
anyway boats are fun to draw
